Andrew Wakefield found "irresponsible" by the General Medical Council over MMR vaccine scare

Andrew Wakefield- the British doctor who claimed to have discovered a link in 1998 between measles virus, bowel diseases, and autism on the basis of case studies on 12 children- was branded a dishonest, irresponsible doctor by the General Medical Council disciplinary panel last week.

Wakefield's claims launched a worldwide panic, triggered dangerous declines in childhood immunization rates, and caused thousands of cases of measles across the globe.

In the past decade, there have been many well-controlled studies in hundreds of thousands of children in multiple countries by multiple investigators, and none of these studies have found any link between autism and the MMR vaccine.
